Community of PracticeThis is a featured page

The Canadian Association for School Health has been working with number of organizations in supporting school health. As part of the networking activity, we are developing mini-networks on particular issues, including Aboriginal School Health. This Community of Practice presents an opportunity to support knowledge exchange, foster coordination and collaboration on a variety of projects of interest to its participants by bring together national non-government organizations, researchers, local agency practitioners (e.g. school district and health authority professionals) and others as interested.

The Community of Practice meets via teleconference approximately 4 times per year typically by teleconference/web-based meetings. Minutes and items of interest for each of these calls are attached below. For more information, contact Cindy Andrew at candrew@cash-aces.ca.

There are several opportunities that are being planned to support the exchange of evidence-informed practices, resources and research. Practical activities geared to helping support effective practice include:

School Health Webinars: These are 60 minute, web/phone based seminars presented by a blend of research experts and practitioners. Each session is very topic specific (e.g.Health and Healing – Reuniting Family, Youth, and Elders Through Métis Culture). More about the webinars program can be seen at: http://www.safehealthyschools.org/webinars/introduction.htm.

Aboriginal School Health Symposium (April 21/08 in Ottawa-Gatineau): this day-long focused on a comprehensive approach to this issue and was planned in conjunction with the 4th annual National School Health Conference. For updated information on this symposium and the National School Health Conference that followed it see www.safehealthyschools.org/shconferences.

Aboriginal school health presentations featured at the symposium included:

Bryan Hendry - First Nations School Nutrition Pilot Program

Ginette Thomas - Reflections & Directions

Sydney Millar - Encouraging Girls & Women To Get Off the Bleachers

Karin Kettler - National Aboriginal School Health Program
